RootHealth vs. Personal Training

When it comes down to it, do you want?

  • Specific results or a general process?

  • Independence or dependence?

  • To gain competence in: how to use the equipment in the gym or how to develop yourself optimally….for a lifetime?

  • Healthy habits/techniques so that you don’t have to ‘workout’ or a ‘gym schedule’?

  • A true coach in all aspects of physiology and healthy behavior or a workout partner?

  • To experience an ‘exercise coach’ or a health and performance consultant, advisor, project administrator and Sports Kinesiologist/Medical Exercise Specialist?

Terminology:

“Personal”  “Training” is a marketing term. ‘Personal’ is used to advertise one-on-one sessions. ‘Training’ is what the gym offers with respect to equipment or sports (the training part). So, there's often a missing link between the personal aspect and the training aspect, depending on the gym's specialty.

Consider: A boxing gym would be ‘personal boxing training’ using bags and gloves. A math tutor might offer ‘personal math training’ using pencils, paper, and calculators.

In ‘fitness’ the word in the middle of the phrase is ‘body-building’. Fitness clubs were mostly body building centered at their inception and are still. This was due to the ability to sell the use of ‘parts based’ equipment like the leg extension as well as to the ease, but not the efficacy, of applying body building principles such as: a parts based methodology (ex. bicep day, leg day, etc); calories in vs. out accounting for nutrition; larger muscles; and leaner body via these principles.

Sometimes there is a digression away from body building and the word is dependent on the trainer. I myself (as a training department director) was required to ask the question in interviews “What kind of trainer are you?” This meant: Yoga? Body Building? Power Lifter? Pilates?

So ‘fitness’ becomes ambiguous and most of the time the coach doesn’t really know how to nail down with you what the actual goal is….longevity, looking better, competition. The approach was more based on the aforementioned ‘word’ in the middle which is to say the specialty of the gym or the trainer.

This is valuable if you are a bodybuilder and need bodybuilding training or a runner needing running training. But, if you need development for health in any context, there’s a very strong interdependency within the body. A person with a shoulder problem should have a trainer that knows how to correct for posture AS WELL AS the shoulder rehab for instance.

So, this is where our ‘consultant’ or ‘advisory’ piece is valuable. RootHealth, on the other hand, focuses on achieving individual results rather than just following a process or using the tools of the facility or the professional. A ‘kinesiologist’ or a strength and conditioning specialist should know how to break down and create results in EVERY domain of physical ability.

What we do is to truly ascertain the goal, reverse engineer your physiology, starting from the desired result and working backward to tailor methods that will move you toward that goal effectively.

Programs?

Activity doesn’t equal achievement.” - John Wooden

Moving on to program administration and project management versus simply working out. Merely going through motions in a generic workout setting is unlikely to yield the desired changes a) with optimal results and b) without side effects.

While people do get results with trainers at times, the gym itself is prohibitive of prescriptive exercise (the MAIN component of the developmental program). Have you ever seen a trainer looking around the gym for a free piece of equipment? How can you prescribe the bench press for a client if all the benches are taken at any given time?

Instead, our approach involves precise prescriptions tailored respectively to move you from your current condition to YOUR goals, whether those are in cardiovascular, metabolic, or mechanical areas.

Return on Investment

Our primary goal is to optimize your return on investment (ROI) by minimizing the time, frustration, and monetary investment required while maximizing results. We also consider the "PITA Factor" - eliminating the hassle and inefficiencies often associated with traditional gyms to improve your overall experience and results.

Out of the Box

Speaking of traditional gyms, they're often like big boxes that actually confine your movement. The human body is designed to interact with nature (or something mimicking it), promoting functional movements that mimic real-life activities rather than isolated exercises in a box-like environment.

Restorative/Functional Development

The movement process should mimic the processes gone through within human development from baby to athlete.

Can you run (properly)? Jump? Crawl? Climb? Get up off the ground?

Why would you use weights or machines when you lack control over your own body?

Your training should focus on precision technique utilizing the PRECISE exercises for the training zone you are in. This requires on a focused attention on what the body requires for health, function (activities of daily living), or competition. And must utilize detailed health and physical testing to assess this aspect.

See our ‘Zone of Training’ video on more on this.

Independence!

Training’ is teaching, or developing in oneself or others, any skills and knowledge that relate to specific useful competencies. Training has specific goals of improving one's capability, capacity, productivity and performance. - Wikipedia

‘Training’ must yield independence through competence. This involves empowering you to understand the "why" behind your training and make informed decisions for optimal results. Whether through our in-person sessions or online offerings, we provide hands-on manual therapy and education to enhance your understanding and precision in achieving your fitness goals.
